I remember the big tent revival meetings at Holmes Bible College in May each year my daddy would take the family to and I heard them blowing the trumpets like heavenly sounds. I remember the church chimes playing and charming the streets on a mild Spring Sunday morning and remember that their dad ran the local Watkins products dealership but later got into real estate for the building boom. Jack grew up and preached awhile while Larry was drafted into the army. Later Jack got into building houses and after he married Waldo Leslie's daughter went into politics for awhile but lost later in a race for what? For secretary of State having his picture on every tree in South Carolina. This was back when young republicans took over the legislature, raised taxes and made an even greater mess than the long time democrat’s. Anyway, then Jack lost and never hung his picture on a tree again and I am sure the state appreciates it. Larry buys old houses and repairs them and rents them to poor folks while Jack got super rich in commercial real estate and now has built 2 buildings for Publix. Publix food chain sells beer, wine and cigarettes 24 hours per day like the Jack Shaw corner on East North and 291 bypass where Jack owns both sides of the busiest crossing in town where Jack leased to a convenience food-mart years back to sell the devils products. It’s a long way from the strict discipline of the church of the mid century. These are the people that influence the new church today because they have money and money is power. Jack joined the Baptist later and they do not preach against anything like Billy Graham. Oral Roberts was here last week while I was in Vegas preaching his gospel of wealth. Sow a seed and be rich. He promised that God was going to make 4 millionaires out of people in the church where he spoke. What have these people done so bad that God would punish them by making them millionaires. Millionaires are not happy. Oral Roberts stopped preaching years ago and joined the Methodist church. Why? Does he think one church will save him over any other? No preacher has dared to preach against compromise for fear of being fired. Pastors are traditionally fired at the church daddy Shaw attends now for much less. The Sunday Morning Princess Diana was killed, their pastor reportedly preached on the sins of Di as reported later by a hair dresser of mother Shaw, that she complained of such preaching and I thought this mans job is in jeopardy. A few weeks later he was history at that church. What is a job if one must compromise principal? What is money if one sells their soul? What is a preacher if man is his boss and not God? What is heaven that we should trade off? What is hell that we should escape? What is eternal life that we should trade away? Who is God that we should betray? We need God! Dear Lord, Make us wise in Spiritual matters to feel you. The mystery of man in his relationship with God has given way to a great world of confusion. Many men have profited off this mystery to a point of being ridiculous. Truth is simple and easy to understand. Man seems to want to be conned into a false doctrine. The modern church gives people a false sense of security. Let us challenge the church to teach the full gospel of truth and right. Is not there yet and not about to be, God help us.
